The Nebellyn Regional Council convened yesterday to discuss a proposed expansion of the Fog Observation Network, a system of sensors and monitoring stations that tracks atmospheric conditions across the valley. Officials cited increasing fog-related disruptions to transport and agriculture as key reasons for the review. The network currently operates 12 stations, providing real-time data on visibility, humidity, and wind patterns.
Current Network Performance and Limitations
Established in 2018, the network has recorded an average of 87 dense fog events per year, with peaks during autumn months. Data from the stations has helped reduce road incidents by 14 percent through improved alerts. However, coverage gaps in the eastern hills and southern farmlands leave some areas without timely warnings. Council members noted that expanding to 20 stations could address these shortfalls while integrating new lidar technology for deeper atmospheric profiling.
Budget estimates for the expansion range from 1.2 to 1.8 million euros, with potential funding from regional grants and local contributions. Representatives from the transport authority emphasized benefits for rail scheduling, while farmers highlighted risks to livestock and crop drying processes during prolonged fog.
Community Input and Next Steps
Public consultations are scheduled for next month, allowing residents to review proposed station locations and voice concerns over land use. Environmental groups have requested assessments on the impact of additional equipment on local wildlife. The council plans to vote on a feasibility study within six weeks, with a final decision expected by spring. If approved, construction could begin by late summer, aiming for full operation within two years. Officials stressed that any expansion must balance technological needs with fiscal responsibility and community priorities.
